Lovely Book Shelves...compliments of Knock-Off Wood

My project without the help of my hubby..really I had no help from anyone. This is a one women job ;)....Ana over at Knock-Off Wood has some of the greatest plans...this is one of two bookcases, using simple plans lined out..this was a fast and easy project, the results are wonderful. I took the simple layout to Lowes so they could cut it for me..they charged me nothing! Two hours to put the shelves together, prime, a couple of coats of white paint, clear vanish for the last coat. (incase the grandchildren write on it, it will be easy to clean. I built this for my little granddaughter room, she will be loading it with baskets and toys....

In the process of building

Completed bookcase....moving on to sanding, priming and painting

complete..........lets decorate!

Great ease and wonderful results

  4. Thank you everyone for your comments, I really do appreciate it. Jeannine..I have built bookcases before as well as a murphy bed and a desk...but I am telling you, the plans that Ava gives is sooooo easy to follow, just make sure to have Lowes or Home Depot cut the peices for you (this makes it soooo much easier)..with them cutting it, your cuts are purfect, correct and straight..took me less than 2 hours to put it together "nice" and I am completely disabled. I am going to build the kitchen hutch next and then the office whole set..I cant wait..good luck to everyone ;)

  9. Jerilyn,
I wish to do a bookcase from Ana's collection too! your bookcase looks lovely.
Do you know how much it cost you to make this bookcase? Under $50 or over?

  10. Cost of the bookcases..which makes 2...I have only made one at this time...but the total cost was 25.00 for one sheet of MDF, 20.00ish dollars for the 1x2.only because I did not buy the cheapest..I didnt want any knots or dents in the finished edges. Prime and Paint $5.00ish dollars..so yeah you can make both of them for right at $50.00 so worth it, tons of storage, alot bigger than the picture look...good luck....

  11. You did a great job!! I just built my first project from Knock-off Wood.... the West Elm-inspired wheeled storage cubby. What type of paint do you feel works the best? Are you using latex paint and if so, which sheen (flat, eggshell, semi-gloss, etc?) Keep up the good work!

  12. Jill, I use a flat or satin paint..couple of coats but I still always put couple of coats of Lowes Valspat Clear Protector. This is the greatest stuff I have ever used..when they say clear, this is really true..it does paint on in a white, but goes completely clear (even on black) I use the Protector so that no paint job gets scratched..enjoy all the builds, thanks so much for the compliment

  14. Jerilyn,
Congratulations! The bookcase looks fabulous. the construction *and* your color choice - both are pretty.
I just have a couple of questions though - Ana's instructions recommended using a countersink bit while predrilling. Did you have to use one every time? Also, how long were the cabinet screws that you used?

Thanks in advance! Based on you suggestion in one of the comments above, we are planning to build two of these bookcases as per Ana's plans.

  15. Thank you so much..I am so amazed at all the compliments & just love receiving them. regarding using a countersink bit..I put the book case together first with my nail gun, then picked a smaller drill bit then what the screw would be..predrilled about every 8-12 inches apart (this is after you have put the whole thing together)..yes I did use a countersink in each whole I predrilled..so after predrilling each whole, I changed the drill bit out to a countersink and went real quick into each whole I had predrilled. I do think it is important, you dont want to split the wood & you dont want the screw sitting flush..pine is very soft and so is MDF, so its just a simple countersink. putty all the wholes with PL Fix wood filler from Lowes, in a toothpaste kindof tube, it is the easiest to use and really great when it comes times to sand which you can do within an hour or so. The screws I used are Wood Madera from Lowes..Flat Phillips-Zinc 8x2 (2 inches long). I am sorry this is so long but I wanted to be able to answer the questions completely..if you have any more questions, plz dont hesitate to contact me..Thx again..Jerilyn

  17. Ahhhh..Kim, thx, I really appreciate the compliment. This is my therapy in times when I able to do things, which sometimes feels few & far between at times. I love building & making things, so glad yall still enjoy the blanket. I made it for Jilli's "new" bedroom.
